Human survival and prosperity depend on having an effective universal model we call knowledge. An effective universal model is both comprehensive and integrated, requiring significant portions of the model to be based on imagination and faith. Since these portions are the weakest link in the model, they decide the overall strength of the model. The portion of our knowledge that is based on faith we call religion. Religion is therefore the keystone to the effectiveness of all our knowledge.
