Humane Society Cockatiel Update... It was decided to have a necropsy performed on the little Cockatiel to find out the exact cause of death. It is something that I feel very strongly about because it leaves little doubt. The results from my Avian Vet, Dr. Driggers, are that the little bird was attacked by a small dog or a large cat. The tail was fractured, most likely from the dogs or cats paw holding the bird down. The body sustained puncture wounds from the teeth of the dog or cat that bit down on the bird. The radius bone in the wing was broken from the bite and had a puncture would as well. Most likely the little bird lost the desire to eat or drink because of the pain. The cause of death was infection from the bites. All of the injuries would have healed with proper medical care from an Avian Vet, but without the antibiotics to fight the infection from the bacteria in the saliva of the dog/cat that inflicted the puncture wounds there was no hope of survival. It was a very painful ordeal for that poor little bird. We will never know the circumstances that led up to the attack. It is just one more statistic that should not have been added to the category of birds that died from dog or cat bites. So sad that this little life was wasted because of human error. Either the bird flew off out a door or window and was attacked outdoors, or it was attacked by the family dog/cat. Either way, the incident was totally avoidable. Birds should never commingle with dogs or cats. The risks are too great and the bird is the one that pays dearly for it, and many times with its life.
