Humans seem to need crowns. Here we have two splendid crowns from the Newark Museum collections of the art of global Africa. A Yoruba beaded crown, and an Asante beaten gold crown. Both show European influence (the European beads on the one hand, the form on the other), but each is unique to its culture and represents a complete integration into its locale and people. We not only need crowns, but we need to make them ours. - Ulysses Grant Dietz, Chief Curator
