Humberside Police are asking cat owners to be vigilant following the death of a cat due to poisoning on Thorpe Road, Howden. Police were contacted after the cat was taken ill and died shortly before Christmas by what is thought to be anti-freeze poisoning. It is not known how the cat came into contact with the anti-freeze and whether it was accidental or intentional although cats can easily come into contact with anti-freeze at this time of year when leaky car radiators leave deposits of anti-freeze on the road. It takes only a small amount of the substance to cause fatal consequences to small animals. The cat’s owner is keen to ensure people are aware of the incident and to look out for similar symptoms in their own cats such as nausea and vomiting; wobbly, uncoordinated or drunken-appearing gait; twitching muscles; short, rapid movements of the eyeball or head tremors. Humberside Police have spoken to the RSPCA and made them aware of the incident and ask that if anyone suspects their cat may also have been a victim of poisoning in the Thorpe Road area of Howden or has any information, they should contact Humberside Police on the non emergency number 101 quoting crime reference 2089937. Further information about the symptoms and possible causes of anti-freeze poisoning can be found via the following link to the RSPCA: rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/cats/health/poisoning/antifreeze
