Humpback whales feeding in the Monterey Bay National Marine - TopicsExpress

Humpback whales feeding in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Great look into the mouth of feeding humpback. The pink strip in the roof of its mouth is a special organ called the Corpus Cavernosum Maxillaris that whales likely use to cool their brain. It acts just like a penis - the whales can pump blood into the organ and the rushing water inside its mouth cools it down so it can circulate it back through the brain. See diagram at: phenomena.nationalgeographic/files/2013/03/CCM-diagram.jpg Great shot from Kate Cummings of Blue Ocean Whale Watch
