Hundreds hit by hackers: Residents should check bank, credit card statements Hundreds of Guam residents were hit with fraudulent credit or debit card charges following data breaches involving U.S. retailers in recent months, a local bank executive confirmed yesterday. As a result of the theft of credit and debit card numbers from Kmart, The Home Depot and other U.S. businesses, some of Guam customers cards were compromised, said Philip J. Flores, chief executive officer of BankPacific. One of BankPacifics customers told the Pacific Daily News shes been notified of a $500 fraudulent charge to her account, but the bank has assured her shes not liable for it. Flores said fraudulent charges of Guam-issued credit and debit cards werent limited to BankPacific, but did not list other financial institutions affected. The problem affected hundreds of card customers at financial institutions islandwide who used their cards at Kmart, Home Depot and at other retailers that were hacked, he said. As a precaution, BankPacific has issued new cards to its customers, Flores said. Guam customers need to closely watch their credit and debit card statements to spot fraudulent transactions, Flores said. Customers must report to their card issuer any suspected fraudulent transaction within 30 days of a credit card statement, or 60 days for debit card statements, Flores said. The Home Depot announced in September that 56 million of its U.S. customers credit cards were breached. The home improvement retailer has said its customers arent liable for fraudulent transactions, and it is offering free credit monitoring service to customers. The Home Depot has said the data breach affected card transactions in April this year at Home Depot stores nationwide. Kmarts corporate office confirmed in October that beginning in early September, its payment data systems were infected with a new form of malware. This resulted in debt and credit card numbers getting compromised, according to Kmart President Alasdair James in a written statement on Oct. 10. Customers who shopped with a credit or debit card at Kmart stores between September and Oct. 9 will receive credit monitoring protection for free, Kmarts president stated. guampdn/article/20141209/NEWS01/312090001/Hundreds-hit-by-hackers-Residents-should-check-bank-credit-card-statements
