Hundreds of youth drawn from various social clubs and organizations within Constituency 112 in the far west of Freetown have come together to form an umbrella union with a vision to transform young people for national development and prosperity. During an official meeting held on Sunday 8th September 2013 at the Serry-Kamal Entertainment Complex Hall on Kabbah Drive, Juba Hills in Freetown, the youth named the union as ‘Western Area Youth Development Union’ WAYDU for short. Speaking at the meeting, the Interim Coordinator, Mr. Ibrahim Bangura told Awareness Times that the union comprises of over fifteen social clubs and development organizations within Constituency 112. He said the union which can confidently now boast of a general membership of over five hundred young people, is aimed to empower youth to enable them actively contribute and partake in community development and young people’s welfare. According to Mr. Bangura, the union will be advocating for the empowerment of young people within the constituency and further provide them with skills trainings that will help them meet challenges in the employment world. He said this will also help to capacitate them to contribute to issues of national and community development. The Union’s Public Relations Officer, Mohamed A. Kamara said the union will enhance unity, partnership and networking among youth clubs and organizations within the constituency and other parts of the country in particular and the world in general. He said it will further commit young people to dedicate their youthfulness and experience to contribute to the achievement of the Agenda for Prosperity. He added that the union will help member clubs and organizations to execute community development programmes and activities such as cleaning exercises, scholarships, community sensitizations on health, agriculture, education, development, sports and security among other issues in their respective communities. The Public Relations Officer used the forum to call on groups which are yet to become members, to speed up and join the wagon of youth development and transformation.
