Hunger Games: Mockingjay, part 1 - movie review Grade: B- I hate reviewing movies like this because I know a lot of people love, Love, LOVE the Hunger Games movies. Unfortunately Im not one of them. Dont get me wrong. I dont hate them. I just think theyre sort of, you know, meh. Part of it is because I have read the books and already know whats going to happen. Having read the books I, along with everyone I know, think the first book was the best. Given that its going to be hard for any of the movies to improve on the first one. Since Mockingjay is being split into two parts some leeway has to be given to part 1 because its primarily the build up to the climatic ended. I think the creators realized that all the action takes place in part 2 so they invented some action/drama for part 1. I shouldnt complain because thats great for adding Peetimes, but the movie would have been better if theyd edited a little tighter. (Im thinking mostly of the scene on the stairs.) Its hard to criticize the acting because the cast is outstanding. What I would criticize is the script that comes across as overly dramatic. Not all drama has to consist of characters talking. Its okay to let an actor express drama through expressions with little or no dialog. For instance the scene with the white roses after the bombing at District 13 would have been much better if the director would have let Jennifer Lawrence express the hopelessness she feels and then add just one line of dialog: hes going to kill us all. Instead Katniss has to have a long and drawn out breakdown. All-in-all I think part 1 was good enough. If part 2 can improve just a little then well have a worthy final chapter. Id love to know what you think. After seeing Mockingjay part 1 are you excited about the final movie? Or do you think its going to be a disappointment?
