Hurricane Gonzalo is now an extratropical cyclone, having lost its tropical characteristics due to cold sea-surface temperatures and strong veritcal wind shear. The post-tropical cyclone is centered at 5 p.m. EDT/AST over the far northern Atlantic Ocean about 560 miles northeast of St. Johns, Newfoundland, moving toward the east-northeast at 52 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 80 mph. Only gradual weakening is expected during the next 48 hours. The post-tropical cyclone is forecast to merge with another low over the North Atlantic north of the British Isles in a couple of days. This is the last advisory to be issued by NHC regarding Gonzalo.
