Hurricane Vance is holding its strength this morning. Maximum sustained winds are still 105 mph - a solid Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. However, Vance should begin to weaken today, with a steady to rapid weakening afterward. Vance is centered as of 7 a.m. PST / 10 a.m. EST about 490 miles west-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, moving toward the north-northwest. A turn toward the north is expected to occur by tonight, the north-northeast on Tuesday. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect at this time. Rainfall accumulations through Wednesday from Vance - and from the moisture spreading northward ahead of Vance - is expected to reach 4 to 8 inches, with isolated amounts near 12 inches, over the western Mexican states of Sinaloa, Nayarit, and Durango. These rains are likely to produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain. This moisture could spread over the south-central United States, producing heavy rains over portions of the region through Thursday or Friday. Swells generated by Vance are expected to begin affecting portions of coast of southwestern Mexico and Baja California Sur tonight and Tuesday. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Get the latest on this tropical cyclone by visiting the NHC website at hurricanes.gov
