Hurricane Vance is rapidly weakening this morning. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 85 mph - a Category 1 hurricane the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The rapid weakening is expected to continue and Vance could weaken to a tropical depression by the time it reaches the west coast of Mexico on Wednesday. A Tropical Storm Watch continues from Mazatlan northward to Topolobampo, Mexico. A warning may be required for a portion of the coastline later today or tonight. Vance is centered as of 7 a.m. PST / 10 a.m. EST about 100 miles east-northeast of Socorro Island and 340 miles southwest of Mazatlan, moving toward the north-northeast. Rainfall accumulations through Wednesday from Vance - and from the moisture spreading northward ahead of Vance - is expected to reach 4 to 8 inches, with isolated amounts near 12 inches, over the western Mexican states of Sinaloa, Nayarit, and Durango. These rains are likely to produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain. This moisture could spread over the south-central United States, producing heavy rains over portions of the region through Thursday or Friday. Swells generated by Vance will be affecting portions of coast of southwestern Mexico and Baja California Sur today and tonight.
