Turkish Community dance and celebration The dance known to Westerners as Belly Dance, is known as Dans Oriental in the Middle East. There are many clichés about belly dance, such as people often expecting it to be a dance performed by women to entice men. In fact, it was a dance originally performed for women. In many Middle Eastern countries it was used as a preparation for giving birth. and it’s a form of exercise and expression of strong feminist critique. Oriental dancing is deeply ingrained in any Middle Eastern country and has now become more popular in the Western World due to R&B and Hip-Hop music. Belly dance takes many different forms depending on the country and region; both in costume and dance style, and new styles have evolved in the West as it’s popularity has spread globally. Pennycomequick Arts (PCQ) are so very happy to be involved in this event and we do hope many people across all cultural backgrounds will come along to the event, and discover the magic.
