Hutchinson Square in Douglas has recently been renovated and the gates on the eastern side removed. The wartime history is displayed in several places. What is lacking? A common observation of mine is that the open spaces lack children playing. Marie and I walked around upper Douglas for about an hour late this morning without seeing a single child or young person on foot. Sure there are a lot people engaged in organised sport and there are good reasons for not allowing children of certain ages to go out alone but surely there should be some out and about, especially on a beautiful morning when the forecast for the afternoon was not good.. There are plenty of things I would avoid if I had my life again but childhood play is not one of them.
