Hwy 19 construction update For those asking about the intersection at Micaville and NC 80-S, yes, there will be a signal light at that intersection. Just spoke with Adam Shepherd, project engineer for Hwy 19 four-lane work, and to Sam Young with Young and McQueen Grading. The paving work from McDonalds to Flick Video could be completed by today rather than Friday if the weather cooperates. All traffic will be shifted to the newly paved lanes on the south side of the road so construction can begin on a retaining wall between the highway and East-West Boulevard. They are working toward shifting all traffic to the south side from McDonalds to Heritage Lumber. As to why the work on the sections such as the one they are working on from McDonalds to Flick isnt done at night: Around 50 workers, including two contractors, are involved in just this one small section of work that requires 15-20 truck drivers with Rogers Group hauling asphalt from the plant. The entire section would have to be illuminated and the asphalt plant would have to be operating all night with all workers involved paid overtime. Working at night can also increase risk of injury for workers and for the driving public due to limited visibility. I stood near the Roses/Sav-Mor entrance yesterday and watched for about 10 minutes. This was a massive and complicated operation -- but they should be finished one day ahead of schedule. I then drove along the project from Mountain Heritage High School to Heritage Lumber and saw all the different types of work being done. Hats off to these workers and those overseeing this effort. And thanks for the jobs the new road is supporting in our community. The first photo is paving work at the CVS intersection, second is construction work across from McDonalds, third is removing a HUGE boulder blasted out just past Mountain Heritage High School, and fourth is bank stabilization work.
