Hydraulic fracturing was originally patented by Halliburton and first tested in Oklahoma in 1949. The process has since become more widespread and has helped create flammable drinking water and possibly cancer, while causing enormous damage to the environment. In the Energy Policy Act of 2005, a provision was added stating that chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing were exempt from the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Safe Drinking Water Act. This is believed to have been put in place by then Vice President Dick Cheney, former CEO of Halliburton, and is now known as the “Cheney Loophole” or the “Halliburton Loophole”. If hydraulic fracturing is naturally safe for our water supply, then why does it even need an exemption? What do you think?
