Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are here. Well, at least Toyota has one that will be available in late 2015 and at first only in California where the hydrogen fuel infrastructure is already in place. The 2016 Toyota “Mirai” will sell for $58k less any incentives. Toyota (and “Air Liquide”) has plans to establish a network of hydrogen fuel station in CT, MA, NJ, NY, and RI to support “Mirai” sales in 2016. What do you get for your $58k you ask? You get a Camery sized 4 door sedan, an 8-year/100k mile warranty and the first 3 years of fuel. It has a carbon fiber fuel tank that can hold about 11lbs of hydrogen, the 151hp/247lb-ft of torque motor has a 300 mile range and will propel you from 0 to 60 in 9 seconds. Oh, and refueling will take 5 minutes. Did I mention the work “Mirai” is Japanese for “Future”? The “Future” is here… Clever Toyota :-) The numbers above are better than the all-electric vehicles that are out there especially the refueling time. But I will wait for a car that has a range of more than 450 miles, can easily get to 60 in under 6 seconds and has a governed top speed. That’s a car I’m interested in… Oh wait, I already have a car that does all that...
