Hypnotic Blue on the Horizon Yesterday, I painted the walls of my kitchen in a color resembling cobalt blue. If you walk into my kitchen it is quickly evident that whoever painted it is not a professional or was under the influence of a psychedelic. The effect is a somewhat calming, sensory overload, resulting from all the different shades and directions of strokes, akin to the one I experience in large shopping centers when so much is going on that my brain shuts down. I wonder if my kids will be less rambunctious during meal times. This was not my intention, but it would be a welcome side effect. I took brush in hand because I was offended at the quote of the painter and part of me thought it might be fun. I learned two things: 1) Painting is not as simple as it seems. Only by getting my own hands dirty did I come to realize how much is involved in a good paint job. This is true for many things. Only by struggling with it can we appreciate what is involved. 2) It was a lot of fun. Trying new things is very freeing. It frees me from that defeating inner inertia of not trying what I haven’t tried before. By challenging the status quo, the possibilities of what I might and can do increase exponentially. Perception precedes transformation. There is another new learning project that would be really helpful to me that I have been putting off. Suddenly it seems much less daunting. Try something new today. You may be happily surprised at the horizons that open within you.
