I-465 and I-65 Restrictions and Traffic Shifts At South Side Operation Indy Commute INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to restrict traffic for installation of bridge beams and lane shifts on Interstates 65 and 465 to continue construction on the Operation Indy Commute project at the south side interchange area. On Thursday and Friday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., up to two lanes of eastbound and westbound I-465 may be restricted between I-65 and Emerson Avenue as crews modify lane markings to shift three lanes to the left and place temporary concrete barrier wall along the right side of the interstate for the next phase of construction at the bridge over 9th Avenue. On Thursday and Friday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., crews will also install bridge beams for the new westbound I-465 flyover ramp to southbound I-65. For the safety of motorists and workers, traffic on eastbound I-465 will be slowed down approaching the interchange to create a gap in traffic as the beams are lifted above the roadway. On Friday night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., the southbound I-65 ramp to eastbound I-465 will be closed as crews install temporary supports on the new westbound I-465 flyover ramp to southbound I-65. On Saturday night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., up to two lanes of southbound I-65 may be restricted between Thompson Road and Edgewood Avenue overpasses as crews shift lanes into a split traffic pattern. The temporary work zone configuration will maintain three lanes of traffic in each direction. Concrete barrier wall will separate one left lane from two right lanes. Recurring nightly lane restrictions should be expected between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on both directions of I-465 (from I-65 to Emerson Avenue) and I-65 (from I-465 to Southport Road). Work is dependent on favorable weather and schedules are subject to change. The posted speed limit is reduced to 45 miles per hour through the work zone for the safety of workers and motorists. Drivers are advised to always follow speed limits, maintain safe distances from other vehicles, use turn signals and courtesy when changing lanes, and avoid all distractions—especially through work zones. INDOT partners with the Indiana State Police to provide increased work zones patrols and promote public safety.
