I AM A LAND I am a land of diehard blood, of drought and fire and raging flood, Balance of bount’ful range and plain, Where some have prospered others lie, ‘neath sun kissed earth and endless sky, Diversity of riches I contain. ‘Of twisted knarled and ancient trees, rainforests meet the cliff edges seas, ‘Of diamond quilted coast beholding reefs, ‘Of Kakadu and Arnhem lands, history bore by native hands, Formation of this land in their beliefs. To Southern ‘climes of snow-capped peaks, crystal rivers, alpine creeks, Where beauty in its purest form defines, Brumbies roam the alpine passes, delving for the sweetened grasses, Where tales of legend horseman tingle spines. Beyond Bass Strait to Derwints mouth, exquisite isle of the south, Where mother nature’s youthful years where plied, For she nurtured ample fields, of finest fruit and woollen yields, Where mountains cradle lakes, she beautified. A Western plains blood orange hue’s, give way to tones of greens and blues, Always yielding more than they consume, Grasping for a seasons change, sandy plains and rocky range, Transform to waves of aromatic bloom. Shimmering downs in western heat, I marvel pioneering feats, To open up horizon held frontiers, Iconic lakes will bear a crust, surrounding plains deplete to dust, Vast enduring vistas held little fear. Flooding rains in northern lands, fulfils a yearning creeks demands, Each drop is worth its weight in gold and jewels, A country’s droughted cracks are closed, a sea of chocolate brown imposed, Flow now re-connects long stagnate pools. Charming, striking, unforgiving, honest rewarding fruitful living, In a land bore by sweat and leathered hands, From times of drought and deprivation, to rains and joyous celebration, All is never lost…….. in places grand. © Steve McCormack 2015.
