I AM ANCIENT I AM My name is Danniyel Ó Maolmhuaidh. Danniyel Ó Maolmhuaidh—I allow myself to say this aloud. Now thats the sound of a volcano speaking up. Now thats the sound of my forefathers, foremothers. Now thats the sound of snakes dancing down in the space between me and the sky and my squinted eye as the soft-gold light floods and flows and the grass at my nose-tip moves to my heartbeat as I lay in Her, against Her allowing that much— intimacy. My Canaan inheritance, which is my given name, tells me God is my Judge. My Connacht inheritance, which is my family name, calls me Son of Proud Chieftain. And I weave the two together, green fields with the land of milk and honey— joining hearts and hands and ancestral twine, and I say: The kind of God who is my judge is the Relationship We share, You and I. I say: I am proud because I am a Chiefain of Beloved Remembrance, of kissing the dance of our always already brotherhood and sisterhood. I turn to the big book, and like me, Daniel was raised in Babylonian captivity but never converted to their ways. I grew up in a plastic world. I spent almost twenty years in an educational system that failed to recognize what is sacred, in me. And, yet, like Daniel, I interpret dreams and visions and allow the lions to love me alive. Like Daniel, I hold on and remember and write it on the walls for you, my dear. The Ó Maolmhuaidh family crest is a gryphon dancing glorious and wild, in a field of red clovers. Ill meet you there. Bring your history. Bring your adornments. Sing me your songs. I will listen. And I will dance. And we will dance. Come fiddlers. Come bodhráns. Come uilleann pipes. And I hope to God somebody brings a harp. For the proud chieftains. Holding hands. Dancing. Remembering. Together.
