I AM PART OF THE CRIME WATCH IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND THIS ALERT - TopicsExpress

I AM PART OF THE CRIME WATCH IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND THIS ALERT WENT OUT TO US. THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE WITH MY FB FRIENDS AND FAMILY. Several weeks ago I noticed that out of town cars were coming into our neighborhood and stopping along the streets. I knew that in the past this would happen because these drivers were trolling for free Internet wifi, but this practice had almost stopped since all of our neighbors had secured their wireless routers so that no one could log on without a password. These new arrivals got me to thinking that maybe someone had left access open to their wifi system, so I went and checked. I discovered a new wifi feed labeled “Xfinity Wifi Hotspot”, and much to my shock this feed was coming from the new router which I had recently been given as an upgrade from Comcast! I started checking and found out that Comcast had started providing free access to the public from home routers for anyone who had a Comcast account. This is really scary, supposedly the users of this service on the same router cannot access the personal data of the homeowner but this is questionable. Not only is it a security issue but it is inconceivable to me that Comcast would allow third parties to access a home router without the homeowner’s permission. Especially in view of the fact that the customer is paying to provide this service to the People they may not be aware are using it. I discovered that you can log on to your Comcast account and disable this service. I would encourage everyone who is using Comcast Internet service to check their systems and do this at once. Not only to eliminate the possibility of a security breach, but to discourage unwanted traffic in residential neighborhoods. I found out today Comcast is already being sued over this issue: sfgate/business/article/Comcast-sued-for-turning-home-Wi-Fi-routers-into-5943750.php Also here are the steps to disable this service: tomsguide/us/how-to-disable-xfinity-wifi,news-19036.html
