I Am A Man: Dr. King and the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike Two - TopicsExpress

I Am A Man: Dr. King and the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike Two years ago the country celebrated the 50th anniversary of 1963 in Birmingham, and is now this year the country is celebrating the 50th year anniversary of Bloody Sunday in 1965 in Selma. But what I want to know, is this, Will people have the same energy around the intersection of race and class, around the 50th year of the 1968 Sanitation Strikes in Memphis, Tennessee? Personally I doubt it. It is easy to pat ourself on the back for taking down signs that say black only and white only across the nation. But will we be willing to look ourself in the face and recognize that the wealth and income inequality in this nation is worse now, not only along class lines, but also along race lines, than it was during the 1960s when Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights and Labor Rights Movements began to stand together to fight against this grave injustice? Will we be willing to look ourselves in the face and admit we still have not addressed this? Most importantly, will we be willing to stand up and organize and fight to rectify this 47 years later?
