I Am The Bread Of Life Gospel reading: John 6:35-42 and John 6:48-51 Video clip: https://youtube/watch?v=vci5QPRvSQk John 6:35-42 35 “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to Me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Me will ever be thirsty again. 36 But as I told you, you’ve seen Me, and yet you do not believe. 37 Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of Him who sent Me: that I should lose none of those He has given Me but should raise them up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of My Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” 41 Therefore the Jews started complaining about Him because He said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They were saying, “Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” John 6:48-51 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.” **Verses 6:35, 48 “I am the bread of life” is the first of Jesus’ seven “I am” sayings in John…see notes from December 31, 2014 study [Verse 8:12 Jesus as ‘the light of the world’ is one of seven “I am” declarations found in John. Additionally, Jesus said He is “the bread of life” (6:35); “the door” of the sheep (10:7,9); the “good shepherd” (10:11,14); the “resurrection and the life” (11:25); the “way, the truth, and the life” (14:6); and “the true vine” (15:1). Apart from these, Jesus referred to Himself as “I am” (6:20; 8:24,28,58; 18:5), which is an obvious reference to God’s identification as “I am” (Ex.3:14). Jesus exhortation that He is “the light of the world”, reassured and insisted that the hearers put their trust in the light while they had Him with them, so that they might become “sons of light” (12:35-36). Jesus concluded that He came into this world as “the light” so that no one who believes in Him should remain in the darkness (12:46). Unfortunately, according to John, the verdict is: ‘Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil (3:19-21)]. **Verses 6:37, 44 ‘Jesus affirmed the twin themes of election and perseverance of the saints, prominent topics in the John’s Gospel. Those predestined by God will come to Jesus, and Jesus will preserve His own. No one can come to Jesus apart from the Father’s drawing him. These themes continue in the Good Shepherd discourse (10:28-29) and Jesus’ final prayer (17:6,9,11-12)... So great was His love that He gave His son as the ultimate sacrifice and atonement for the sins of man. The Greek word ‘pisteuō’ (to believe) contains four main components: 1) Jesus is the Christ/Messiah; 2) Jesus is God’s only Son; 3) Jesus has the ability and willingness to bring about final salvation and right relationship with God; 4) Surrender to Jesus as the Lord of your life.] **Verses 6:41-42 The ‘complaining’ of the ‘Jews’ parallels the Jews of Jesus’ time with those in the wilderness (Ex. 16:2, 8-9; Nm. 11:4-23)…complaining about the first giver of bread, Moses and now the second giver, Jesus. Additionally, the people showed no awareness of the virgin birth of Jesus, referring to Him as the “son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know…”…followed by protesting that Jesus’ claim of descent from ‘heaven’. Jesus was obviously human and was, and they believed, conceived in the usual manner (4:44). HCSB Study Bible; Holman Christian Standard Bible
