I BOUGHT 4 CARS, 8 PLOTS OF LAND AND GAVE N2.5m TO THE POOR- Kano robber confesses to police The Kano Police Command caught a suspected thief, Aminu Garba, popularly known as Maishanu. His confession makes for an interesting read. Here’s how Sunday Trust narrated it: A mild drama played out at the Kano State police command yesterday when a notorious robber, Aminu Garba, popularly known as Maishanu, said he shared N2.5million out of the N11million he stole from a construction company in the state to the needy in his neighbourhood in the spirit of Ramadan fast. At the beginning of the recently concluded Ramadan fast, Maishanu robbed a multi system construction company in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State and went away with N11million cash and gold jewellery worth N28million. Shortly after the operation, he went on a spending spree. He bought four cars in a day, three tricycles and eight plots of land at different locations in the state. His house in Mariri area of the state turned to Mecca of sorts as residents thronged there for financial assistance. Sunday Trust gathered that the suspect rendered financial assistance to many and gave the cars and the tricycles to the unemployed youth for transport business. Speaking at the Kano police command, Maishanu said he went for the operation alone, adding that it was the easiest of the numerous raids he had carried out in his nine-year sojourn in robbery. “I abandoned my petrol black market business for robbery in 2005. And this is the best and easiest operation I have so far carried out. It was easy because I only jumped a fence and broke the window before gaining access into where the money was kept. It was a friend that hinted me that the money was kept in a safe inside the company. “I opened the safe, carried the money and the jewellery without the knowledge of security guards who were deeply asleep. In the morning I called the boy who gave me the hint on phone. He is Kabiru Master. I lied to him that it was only N5million I saw in the safe and I gave him N350, 000 out of it. I also called one Hassan who confirmed to me that the money was really in the company’s safe. I gave him N50, 000 too,” he said. He said that after settling his accomplices, he hid the remaining money inside the ceiling of the entrance of his house, but removed it when the house was gutted by fire. “For seven days the money was intact inside the roof of my house, but when fire gutted there I removed it and started spending the money. I bought two Sharon cars in a day, two Golf cars the following day, and three tricycles a day after. I also bought eight plots of land at different locations in the state,” he said. He said as he started spending money he dispatched a team for surveillance in the construction company where he stole the money. “I sent two people to the company for surveillance. Their job was to listen to conversations of the workers and the management. One of them came back and told me that all was well, but that I lied to them that the loot was N5million. I appeased him with some gold,” he added. He said he disbursed N2.5million to people of his area as Ramadan gift, explaining, “I did that because of the blessings of Ramadan. For 28 days I was a millionaire in our area and people kept coming to me for assistance in all forms. I put smile on their faces.” He continued, “Stealing is my business and I have been doing it for long with passion. This is the second time I’m brought here (Kano SARS) and I’m assuring you it will be my last time. If not for the fact that I was arrested I would have bidden farewell to the business.” He further revealed that all the people he gave cars for business refused to give him returns, adding that it was while struggling to retrieve his cars that he was arrested. “I assisted them with the cars, but they betrayed me. Aside from buying them the cars, I gave them money for fuelling, but they were not giving me returns. It was while I was trying to recover the cars that I was arrested,” he said. Maishanu, 38, was arrested by the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Kano command, led by CSP Yusuf Kolo. Parading the suspect, the spokesperson of the Kano command, ASP Magaji Musa Majia, said that when the case was reported to them, they invited all security men and staff members of the construction company for interrogation. “In the course of their interrogation, one of the staff members of the company told us that a notorious robber in their area had been on a spending spree. We traced his house but we couldn’t arrest him as he had relocated,” he said. Parading the suspect, Majia revealed that they used a tricycle to trail the suspect for three days before he was arrested around the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital area. “When we got to know the area he was hiding we laid ambush, using a tricycle because he too was using same to evade arrest. When we eventually arrested him, he didn’t deny raiding the company because in our custody we had all the cars he bought with the stolen money,” he said. According to him, the jewellery worth N28million was sold at N1.2million by the suspect using various tricks. “It was one of the staff members of the company that carelessly informed Maishanu of the money. The staff member went to a tea joint where he owed the owner some money. When the tea seller pressurised him over the debt, he pleaded that he should be patient with him, explaining that their salaries had been brought from the bank and they would be paid the following morning. hat was how Maishanu got to know about the money and went there that night,” he said. He urged the people of the state to be mindful of their utterances, especially the ones that have to do with money. Sunday Trust further gathered that when the suspect was arrested, the remaining N2.5million he left in his house had been stolen by another set of robbers.
