I CAN NOT agree more with this commentary. Its just plain frustrating to see the extent to which horror movies have come to rely on profoundly cheap jump scare tactic. Some of my friends who watched movies like The Cabin in the Woods, The Babadook, Oculus, etc. which I had highly recommended in my posts, complained that they hardly felt frightened and were really disappointed with the movie. I am guessing it has to do with this recent trend that has come to redefine the notion of a horror film in peoples mind. True horror slowly creeps in and doesnt necessarily have to make you jump or give goosebumps; thats more primitive fear you are experiencing.
