I CAN REMEMBER MY FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL... Elsie Welch had the first grade class at Nickelsville Elementary. She was actually a small thin lady. But she had a reputation as being one tough old bird of a teacher. And all my friends and play mates had told scary stories about her and being forewarned I was already shaking in fear when I got to the first grade room. And it didnt take long for me to be convinced of my worst fears when she let fly from the front of the room an eraser at a boy behind me who had been warned not to be talking and almost hit me! I saw it coming and ducked. The eraser bounced off the front of his desk and I was coughing in the cloud of chalk dust. As I climbed back up straight in my chair, Ill never forget that mean stare in her eyes at the boy behind me. To this day I can remember that stern stare. She would have made a great fastball pitcher, maybe a closer! Craig Kimbrall would have had nothing on her for speed and accuracy! Miss Welch wasnt about to get any trouble from me... and never did! Yep, school just aint what it used to be! Nope, not all. :D
