I Commit My Spirit… Those were the last words that Jesus spoke from the cross! “46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:46) Those eight simple words are of great importance to every believer. They were first spoken by David in Psalm 31: “5 Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.” (Psalm 31:5) What David was saying was that he was giving God control over every aspect of his life. He was trusting God with every bit of himself and he was trusting God for his eternal destiny. When we can do that, we are expressing the ultimate expression of God’s will for our lives. Jesus was both God and man! He is both the Son of God and the son of woman. God sent Him as a means of reconciliation between man and Him; that beautiful bond between man and God that was both created and destroyed in the Garden of Eden. God greatest desire was to have that fellowship reestablished but He knew that only man could do it, so He sent His Son Jesus as a man to accomplish what He could not do! Jesus endured the ridicule of man because of His claims that He was the Son of God! He demonstrated His heavenly authority over every aspect of human life. He suffered at the hands of the people He came to save. He endured every form of temptation known to man; yet He remained faithful to His purpose, the purpose that His Father had sent Him to accomplish! He trusted God for every aspect of His life. He said “30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.” (John 5:30) Jesus set the standard by which He calls us to live. He set it very high so that we would not be able to measure up to it on our own; but only with the help of God (via the Holy Spirit). The example He set and that David recorded is what Jesus is asking of us. He is asking that we commit our spirit to the will of God; completely and whole heartedly. When we do that, Jesus’ purpose will have been completed in us! It will not be easy because just as Jesus was tried and persecuted, so we will be also “20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.” (John 15:20). However, just as Jesus was We can also be assured that just as God helped Jesus when He was tempted and tried, that He will help us also:“18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.” (Hebrews 2:18). Jesus knows our pain and our suffering. He knows how difficult it can be when the whole world is against you; yet He never wavered from God’s purpose; “15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) We can pray as David prayed: “15 My times are in Your hand; Deliver me from the hand of my enemies, And from those who persecute me.” (Psalm 31:15) I urge you; especially during this season of Lent, to commit your spirit (will) to God and let Him direct your path. He will sustain you and you will receive mercy “16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16) In Christ, John
