I E L TS SPEAKIN: 12/SEP/2013 CHANDIGARH Sports day/ memorable event When I was in my school, every year we used to have annual sports day for which all the students used to wait eagerly. As far as I can remember, it used to be held in the first week of September. Students from our school were divided into different houses for example, I was in the red house whereas my brother was in the green house. Students from different houses wore T shirts representing their houses . All of us used to be very excited about our sports day. There were different types of field events that we could participate. For instance, in the race category we had 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and marathon race. Among these 100 meters was the most popular race. Then, there were house matches for sports like football, basketball, volleyball and so on. I particularly took active part in long jump and high jump. I always used to win some medals in this event. Even today, I have many medals and certificates in my house which I won during the sports day. The sports day used to last for three days and many fruits and eatables were served during these days finally, on the last day a grand function was organized and some chief guest was invited as guest of honor to distribute the prizes. The best sports person would get scholarship of Rs.5000 every year and his picture would be clicked to be used on the cover page of school magazine. The best house which won the maximum events would march in all the school programs and assemblies until the next year. Questions: What kind of sports were played in the past. What is the difference between indoor and outdoor games. Sports person are more disciplined. Do you agree with this statement. How has technology affected sports? What is the difference between watching sports live in a stadium or on TV. What are the benefits of playing sports? What should government do to promote sports in rural areas? Do sports person these days play for their country or for money and endorsements?
