I FEEL SO ALONE, WITHOUT A FRIEND “Since the age of 12, Ive suffered a condition called Trichotillomania. In laymans terms—‘compulsive hair pulling.’ I suffered shame believing Id brought the affliction upon myself. No one, including my doctor, knew how to help. I was alone and powerless. No matter how hard I tried, it seemed that my hands had a mind of their own. Whats wrong with me, Id often wonder. Every night Id pray for wisdom, and for God to send someone who understood. Then one day, God Winked. A friend called to say she’d just met a woman just like me—with my condition of Trich. Her name was Christina and she gave me a phone number. I quickly dialed, a sweet voice answered, and from the first moment, Christina and I chatted like old friends. We were thrilled to find someone who knew our pain—someone who understood. We talked of meeting soon, but in the meantime, Christina said, I want to mail you some literature. I gave her my address. She LET OUT A SCREAM. It turns out—we lived only TWO HOUSES AWAY! We immediately dropped our phones, and in the dark of night, ran outside in our pajamas, hugged, jumped and cried. When we walked back to my house, and into the light, Christina slowly lifted her long hair revealing patchy, bald spots. Then with a deep breath, I took off my makeup and let her see me, as no one else ever had—not even my husband of ten years. In that moment, I knew my childhood PRAYER had been ANSWERED. I was not alone. Through that miraculous Godwink I felt as though Id met my long lost twin, someone who understood my pain and struggles.
