I FORCED THE LANDLORD TO LET THEM GO. I was visiting on Saturday afternoon, the door of the next door flat slammed shut. Estelle said, there’s Timmy going mad, may have gone dobbing on us. The landlord came flying out to find out what the trouble was. There’s no trouble Bill said. We got a phone call that trouble is starting in this flat. I don’t know what you’re talking about I said, nothing is happening but since you’re here, you better take my advice to let them go, they want to move out. They can’t move, they have to stay here the rest of their life the woman said. No they don’t I said, you got no right holding them, you are holding them hostage while forcing them to stay here and that is against the law. I won’t let them go the woman said. You got no choice I told her, I had legal advice from a lawyer at the Legal Aid and they told me that if you don’t let them go you can be taken under arrest by the police and prosecuted as a criminal. I’m not a criminal she said. You may as well be was my answer. Do they have a lease agreement? What’s that got to do with it? Everything I said, without a lease agreement under the Landlord and Tenants Act you have no claim on them. There’s no signed paperwork she said and they have been here for just over six months. That means they can leave whether they have an agreement or not because their rental period is finished and you must refund them half a week rent at least because it’s against the law to keep their rent money. Woman gave in and released them.
