I, Jane Smith, have just spoken with Dave Adams (recently taken over as Director of Just Act Gambia) who is now in Janjanbureh and he has brought me up to date with progress for Just Act and I am smiling so much. Since the inception of the charity it was always the aim that it would become independent and Just Act Gambia would only work in a supporting role. This is definitely happening now and Dave reports that many members of Just Act are now taking responsibility for their work and are very organised indeed. The initial aim of training tour guides was achieved finally in May this year with eight gaining their licences. Sadly, the need for such guides is probably much reduced due to reduction in tourists going to The Gambia and their concept of needlessly avoiding West Africa as a whole because of ebola. However without this training taking place we would not have the cohesive group that now exists beyond the eight licensed. The setting up of Just Act as a Gambian charity and a member of the National Youth Council has been a huge step forward. One development from this has been the very successful Waste Management/Green Team. Working together with the local government, the team are making daily refuse collections and the community has been sensitised and are truly appreciative of this. Local government are providing tractors fuel and extra workers to supplement the initial two trainees. I am today sending out work gear for the whole team including safety boots, overalls masks etc for the team which Dave initiated through a donation from Beeswift. Victoria Goodall, another committee member was also able to source some donations and they should all be arriving in The Gambia before Christmas via Money-Pipe. Dave had much to report but will write a fuller report later in the week re the plantation, football academy and bee keeping where training is to take place very soon. Just a huge Abarracca Bacci to you all who are working so hard and with such a sense of commitment and unity. HUGE SMILE!!!
