I, Jay Bothra, student of Third Year Computer Engineering, am contesting for the post of SAC-Branch Counselor (B.Tech-COED). I have come up with the following manifesto. You are requested to provide your valuable feedback and if your thoughts resonate with my ideas please give me your valuable support in the form of your votes. Minors Currently in our college there is no provision for opting minors in fields other than our parent field. A System will be developed by which we can pursue minor in fields in which we have interest but are not a part of our mainstream curriculum. At least one minor course could be introduced by each department. For guidance we can have a look on the Minor System at IIT Bombay. Updation of Moodle Moodle is a very powerful tool for the students as well as the faculty. But it is not utilized properly. A system will be devised by which all the subjects and its material (PPTs, Books, Assignments, etc.) for a class (e.g. IInd Year Comps, IIIrd year EC) could be uploaded at the starting of the semester and made visible according to a time scale decided previously so that the students are made available with all the material and prevent them from last minute rush during exams. Another issue is that Moodle cannot be accessed outside the institute which poses a problem to localite students especially. I will make sure that it would be accessible from outside. Remedial Discussions Discussions for students those who are weak in some topic or need some assistance for a particular concept. Equipment Being an NIT there should not be any limitations of resources. But we see that the systems in our labs are out-dated and our labs do not have state-of-the-art equipment’s and resources which make us aware of the current advancements. I will take care that the systems in the lab are updated and we also get an easy access to advanced equipment’s (Some Powerful Systems, Advanced Microprocessors (like ARM, RPi etc.), Demo Cloud Servers etc.) so that we get an insight into these and can pursue some Project or R&D work in these fields. Because until we don’t get to experience them, how we will be motivated to work on them. Teaching Assistants We see that many of our important subjects have part or full involvement of Teaching Assistants. Sometimes we feel that the TA’s are not up to the mark or they are teaching in a manner in which we cannot understand. So a proper system will be established through which such problems will be addressed properly and timely. We have provisions in our college for Lectures from Visiting Faculty, Experts from Industry. So for the topics which are not properly delivered by TA’s we could have speakers coming from outside and teaching us. Searching New Horizons We hear a lot about topics like Cloud Computing, Big Data, Penetration Testing, and CRM. But do not know the right way to learn about them or how we should start working on them. So a special initiative will be taken up in which we students with the help of our faculty and industrial experts start to work in these fields. Topics will be selected by common discussion for a particular semester and all the students (Ist to IVth year) will strive to deliver substantially in that particular field. Electives A System would be developed so that the subjects which are viable for the faculty to teach and the students are interested in could be selected. Industry Participation Programme Though Surat currently is a small place as seen from the IT point of view but still there are vast potentials of its growth. There are many budding start-ups which require enormous talent. So through this programme we will be able to engage ourselves in trending projects which will give us an insight into the working and thinking process of the Industry. Completion of such projects will make a brand value of NIT and showcase the potentials of our students. The Programme will be designed in such a way that all who are interested will be involved in some or the other way so it will be something different from Internships. A Second Phase could be possible after successful completion of the first phase in which we could get grant from industry (e.g. from Chambers, SITA, Diamond Association) work on industry oriented projects. All-in-One iCard It’s an innovative idea through which all the identity cards (Institute, Hostel, and Library) of our college will be combined with an ATM-cum-Debit Card. This card can then be directly used for payment of Fees, issuance of books, exam-registration, payment of charges (like Transcript Fee, Late Fee, etc.), Application for Bona-fide Certificate etc. All the payments will be directly debited to the connected SBI Account. I have already discussed its possibility with SBI Officials. Terminals could be installed at ADMIN and appropriate places. This card can be used as any other common Debit Card at Retail Outlets. I have formulated above manifesto keeping in mind the essential factors that affect the students in their academic journey. I shall strive to complete all the above promises and all the expectations of the students. I shall be always available for discussions, queries, updates, suggestions, criticism and complains though making sure that there will be no complains.
