I Just saw Lucy. It was definitely an enjoyable and interesting movie, but its based on the myth that humans only use 10% of our brains. It seems to have become a trend in Hollywood to depict myths such as this as science. But fear not, Any basic psychology course would teach you otherwise. But seeing as its the end of July, and school doesnt start for another few weeks, Im here to guide those of you who understand this to be true. First off, I took ONE psychology course. While I do remember discussing things such as this in class, I cant recall all the details (because im only using 10% of my brain. Ha. get it?). Anyways, this knowledge bomb came from a quick Google search. There doesnt seem to be a definitive origin for this myth, though its thought to have began with an American Psychologist and author William James, who argued in The Energies of Men that We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources. (direct quote) Heres an interesting quote from Scientific American. The myths durability, Gordon says, stems from peoples conceptions about their own brains: they see their own shortcomings as evidence of the existence of untapped gray matter. This is a false assumption. Directly after it states that it is perfectly plausible to think that during times of rest we may only be using 10% of our brains. Heres a few points from Psychology -Brain imaging scans clearly show that almost all regions of the brain are active during even fairly routine tasks such as talking, walking, and listening to music. -If the 10 percent myth were true, people who suffer brain damage as the result of an accident or stroke would probably not notice any real effect. In reality, there isnt a single area of the brain that can be damaged without resulting in some sort of consequence. -We would not have evolved such large brains if we were only using such a tiny portion of them. -The brain uses approximately 20 percent of the bodys energy. It would make little evolutionary sense to have such a large portion of our energy resources utilized by such a tiny amount of the brain. Well thats it. Unless you want to get me started on the whole Left/Right hemisphere hoax. Sorry for the jumbled mess, but I hope you all learned a thing or two. Goodnight!
