I Know Its Only Rock and Roll (So What The Hell Were you - TopicsExpress

I Know Its Only Rock and Roll (So What The Hell Were you Expecting?) by R.Louis I once heard somebody say, “The real tragedy of Stevie Ray Vaughns death, is that he never learned to play beyond the pentatonic scale.” For those who may not know, the pentatonic scale is considered the most basic musical scale, most commonly played on guitar. It is considered, by those who make such pompous statements, “easy”. This may be trues, I dont know. I know very little about music, Im only a song writer. So maybe SRV did only play in a pentatonic scale, but he did it so well! Only those who stand outside of bars, smoking cigarettes in the parking lot, during open jam night, say such things, perhaps implying they know all things guitar, perhaps. But maybe, just maybe, SRV knew all the scales, I get the feeling he did, but used only what he needed. Its Rock and Roll, not symphony. Its Blues, not chamber music. SRV played how he felt, he played songs, not just music. Thats what its about for me, songs. Because 15 min pieces of music without a singer, is not a song. Technical acrobatics on guitar all the way through, maybe impressive for the first 5 minutes, but I soon get disinterested and bored with it, and it becomes nothing more than background music to loud conversation. So yeah, its only Rock and Roll, but I like it. If yer looking for something else, than find something else, its called “Jazz”. Whats the point in saying “This guy doesnt play the way he should or the way I would.” It is what it is, nothing more, nothing less. Its apples and oranges. -R.L.
