I LOVE hymns and I know Im probably starting a debate here but I have a couple of questions for discussion..... 1) While I do not prefer contemporary Christian music for my personal listening time, if the lyrics uplift Jesus I cannot disparage its work. My first question is this: Can a house divided stand? Is not the fight against modern Christian music the same as the Pharisees attacking Christ as an agent of Satan. Now Im not talking about the mamby pamby singing to Jesus as a lover, no redemptive message music. Im talking about unapologetic Christian message set to a different beat than we are used to. 2). Do those who would argue realize that Jesus and the disciples did not sing the hymns? I love them for their theological depth and the artistry of the lyric BUT their melodies were CONTEMPORARY to their day. John Newton even wrote of composing songs to shanty tunes and pub tunes to get people to listen, as did Martin Luther. There is a problem I have found with most people who talk about the old time way.. Their old time just isnt old enough. They romanticize the era of our Grandfathers and even the reformers without going back 2000 years ago to the era of the early New Testament church! We must take Gamaliels advice....When speaking against the Church, its leaders, music and worship style we must exercise grave caution......else we be found fighting against God!
