† I See Nothing There † And Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. He said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. Matthew 14:28–29 ESV Waves splashed against the side of the boat and the light of the moon shone across the water as Peter and the other disciples stared at Jesus, thinking that He was a ghost. When Jesus told Peter to come, Peter stood in the boat and looked at the water, but there was nothing there to be seen, except for the water, and Jesus standing on it. All of his common sense and experience as a fisherman told him if you step out there, you will drown. The rest of the disciples knew it as well. Everyone knew better than to try to walk on water. Peter pushed these thoughts out of his mind and took a tentative step. Before his foot touched the water, it became solid and supported him. Though he could see nothing there, when he stepped out in faith, there was something there to catch him. That is living faith, obeying even though it looks impossible. Matters of faith are rarely understood by the mind. Once you say “I cannot do that”, you have prophesied your own future. All the heroes of the Bible spoke positively and in faith. Joshua commanded the sun to stand still (Joshua 10:12) and it did. Elijah commanded it not to rain and it did not for three and a half years (James 5:17). We are to work together with God to accomplish His will on the earth. He may ask us to do things that we do not have the means to. At that point, He will provide whatever is needed, though we may see nothing there. It will be there right before your foot hits the water. Yours in Christ,
