I Surely understand that its tiring to be asked to perform for free on stage esp when doing shows is part of our income too. . The Pros of doing free are 1) One of the biggest forms of marketing for your own & brand exposure 2) People actually do come to find you (if you dazzle on stage) or your co-instructors classes (& when your co-instructor performs, ppl may come to your class too- it is a good cycle! ) 3) Your popularity soars (If you Ask organisor to say your name & where you teach on stage.) On the flip side, instructors fears are by doing so, soon, every instructors in Sg will be expected to do free, and no one gets paid anymore. (Loss of income) The trick to balance the free vs paid performance is to 1) evaluate the exposure/marketing benefits you will get. 2) Ask if your name/where you teach will be announced? (if free) 3). What timeslot & (hence) how many participants are there? 4) Do the organisors charge the participants? or is this free for all? charity? 5) Whats the organisors background? Students? or established company? 6) Do you want to work long term & maintain good relationship with this company as there are mutual benefits in long run...? or just a once a year thingy?? 7) Overall, Is this worth your time & efforts? Its never easy :) and sometimes we strike a balance by performing with a discount given... good luck to every one of us. Fighting!
