I Will Be Voting “NO” Because I am Not a Vegetarian Or My Referendum Choice Expressed As A Diet Imagine if you will, Gentle Readers, we are having dinner. You are enjoying your Nut Roast or Linguine with Watercress and Almond Pesto while I tuck into a fine medium rare fillet steak. During the course of the evening you tell me all about the benefits of being a vegetarian. You explain to me that I could be better off financially if I were vegetarian as I could grow my own vegetables and wouldn’t therefore be at the mercy of a greedy butcher who is only interested in exploiting me for his own gains. You tell me that I will be better off health wise and that it would also be better for the environment. You explain to me that a vegetarian diet will help keep my weight down and that I will live longer. You tell me I will have more energy to do all the things I want to do, that I will reduce the risk of food-borne illness, that I will help reduce famine, pollution and toxic waste and that I will simply be better. So you ask me why not just say YES to being a veggie. I listen and continue to eat my steak. I explain to you that I have nothing against vegetables or vegetarians. Many of my friends are vegetarian and I am very fond of vegetables and I enjoy a certain amount of vegetarianism in my diet but I wouldn’t want it to be totally devoid of or separate from meat. I enjoy steak. I like my traditional Christmas dinner and I love bacon sandwiches. There is something, however, I explain, that doesn’t appeal to me about a complete break from things bovine or porcine to go it alone with Les nourritures terrestres. A plate of veg may well have economic and health arguments but, in my opinion, it lacks something and that something is the fulfilling partnership that is the union of meat and vegetables. I am not knocking your vegetarianism but for me it just doesn’t work. I like my plate to have all the components of a tried and true balanced diet. I eat meat because I choose to. And that, Gentle Readers, is why I am voting NO.
