I aboard a shared auto today utilizing the service with three other girls(mainland Indian). Being the male passenger, i did them the courtesy of sitting beside the driver. We began the journey and the three girls began chatting about stuffs which i did not pay atention to. Then, as we moved, a Northeastern girl was standing by the roadside seeming like she was waiting for someone. She was wearing a knee-level skirt and her face was caressed with a bit of make-ups(nothing indecent about it for me). The three girls seated behind went silent all of a sudden and were scrutinizing the girl with every resentment in their faces indicating their complacency. After we drove past her, they came back to their jolly moment, but with a different tone. One of them(i heard clearly) said, chinky hain, chinky hain. Wo log eisa hota hain. And they continued with their chatting by complaning about her and everything about NEterns in general. For a fleeting moment my rage was imploding and my instinct told me to give them some bitter comments. But i restrained. Yes i did! I mean, Whats the point? If i try argueing with them, they will put on their shields of generalizing all men to be the one in fault which the tyranny of our patriarchal societies have brought. Whatever it is that we as Northeast Indians are fighting for, (acceptance, recognization or whatever you may call it) is still so far from our grasp when our fellow Indians are talking about us like that among themselves, Or even in the presence of us.
