I absolutely cannot stand demagogic defenses of gaming as a dominion of manhood, or the naïve belief that gaming has matured into an idyllic industry bountiful with egalitarian themes and narratives. Heres the truth: gender issues are endemic to entertainment, particularly gaming as a late-blooming form thereof. It is not virtuous, accurate or constructive to believe women havent been collectively plundered as lazy entertainment for three consecutive generations of gamers. Even so, there is an unfortunately significant body of gamers that continue to mount these naïve or demagogic defenses. Perhaps they are xenophobes in the raw; perhaps they are threatened by the erosion of an institutional hegemony; perhaps all effort to redefine an art are met with paroxysms of territorial rage from the élite; or perhaps theyre just astonishingly oblivious to their own privilege as a male gamer in a decidedly male machine. Whatever the reason for such defenses, it continues to amaze me that these degenerates are unaware—willfully or otherwise—of their contribution to the life of the myth they disavow. Anachronists have no place in the inevitable games industry of the future, if not because liberal advancement will snuff them out, then certainly because such toxic insularity deserves neither respect nor attention.
