I actually believe that reinstating the line from PIckering to Rillington would be a great idea, however I do think that rebuilding the track from Pickering station along the original route is now virtualy impossible, there is the Co-op car park, busy main roads, a new supermarket ( Lidl ) and houses. An alternative may be to take a route from from further back from the station towards where the current track runs close to the Whitby road, and take a new route around Pickering across the main road to Thornton le dale and then rejoin the original route somewhere between Marishes and the Black Bull on the PIckering-Malton road. The other costly obstacle would be crossing the river Derwent, a new bridge would be required. But it s not impossible, and when you consider that just six miles is all that is missing to connect Whitby with York, Malton, Leeds and everywhere else, it seems crazy NOT to do it.
