I actually got to meet Joan Rivers once, a long time ago when I was a waiter at the old Marriott hotel in Lincoln Square. She came in for breakfast with her daughter Melissa, and another woman with a little toddler. The kid was rambunctious and grabby. Joan was talking to the ladies and twice the kid came close to knocking over Joans glass of orange juice, he wanted it. So I got a rocks glass from the bar, filled it with OJ, wrapped it in plastic wrap and stuck a stir straw through it and gave it to the kid. It occupied him him through the whole breakfast, which let the ladies talk. As she was leaving, Joan Rivers herself took me aside and thanked me for my deed, pressed a fifty into my hand, and pinched me on the cheek. May she Rest in Peace.
