I admit that when I was younger, I was much more passionate about sports teams and rivalries. The Red Sox three World Championships certainly helped take the edge off, but my sense of sports hatred and passion was already diminishing well before that happened. Still, I recall that I used to (sports-)HATE the Royals. It seemed like they were always beating the Red Sox 2-1 on a walk, stolen base, bunt, and sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning, and a George Brett homer in the 8th. Then, post-1985 (their last championship), they slowly slid into small market misery, unable to figure out how to compete like the As, Twins, and later, Marlins and Rays. So for the past couple of decades, I really have felt bad for Royals fans, who, being mainly from places like Missouri and Kansas, have so little to live for in the first place. (Relax. Its a joke.) Congratulations to the Royals! I PROMISE that I will be rooting for them against the Los Angeles Orange County California Golden Seals Angels of Anaheim Featuring Josh Hamilton and Angry Mike Scioscia. Note to self: learn name of at least ONE Royals player in case of random sports discussion while waiting for pizza in bar at Red Onion.
