I agree. However, I think that we have to consider the 4 year model (modified perhaps) as where the baseline skills are developed. Learning to read, write, research, and think critically and creatively are skills that can be delivered in varied non-vocationally specific disciplines which allow for intellectual growth and learning in fields that students may never have explored or considered but which may resonate for them. Literature, Philosophy, History should not be dismissed as irrelevant but are rather ways to deliver skills that will underpin the more narrow vocationally oriented skill sets that will change over time. Understanding human behavior, however, is an evergreen skill. Universities are also where knowledge is created as well as imparted.
