I agree that these views are shortsighted. They detract from those who have service goals in mind as one issue. But more importantly they do not recognize that the major becomes less important as time goes on and that the student with the liberal arts degree is more likely to advance further in later life because of having broad skills including communications (writing), the capacity to research and analyze and understanding of people. (Few people end their careers where they started.) These are skills learned in the humanities and social sciences. Quite frankly any major can deliver on these skills if taken in a broad curriculum. But we have to also teach students how to market themselves and their skills and assure that they are also getting work experience through jobs or internships and extracurricular activities that can demonstrate skill utilization and create critical networks.
