I almost decided not to post this today as I have so thoroughly discussed this issue and this case in particular, but seeing Cynthia Giffords compelling video discussing what happened to her and her husband really touches me. I wanted to write an open letter to Cynthia and Robert Gifford to let them know that as a lesbian, I am proud to stand with them in support of their God-given right to their religious beliefs. I cant control what a militant gay couple or an overreaching government does, but I can and will speak out loudly and speak out often in the cause of #Freedom / #ReligiousFreedom The truth is they were set up by a couple of militant lesbians who simply wanted to get their 15 minutes of fame while at the same time, pushing an agenda, not of love and acceptance, but and agenda of fascism and compliance, at the expense of the Giffords religious beliefs. I cannot tell you how proud of them both I am for standing up to oppression. My partner and I have been together for decades and we strongly support equal legal rights for gay couples, but that does NOT give us the right to dictate religious beliefs to others. No society should legislate what religious beliefs are acceptable and which ones are not. We dont need to force an artisan to take our picture if they dont agree with our views regarding faith. We dont need to force a small business owner to bake us a cake, and we do not need to force what should be our most precious ceremony on a family like the Gifford family who are obviously not homophobic, but merely declining to participate in a religious ceremony they feel violates their conscious. Come on, guys. It is their most fundamental right to decide who they will invite into their home for such a ceremony. The problem is that the term Marriage today has two aspects to it. One aspect is legal and one aspect is religious. We are going to have to separate the legal aspect of marriage to protect the religious aspect of the term. The answer to these matters is so simple. ALL Americans should get civil unions, guaranteeing equal rights and ensuring medical, insurance, or other legal matters are handled properly. Then, those couples who wish to do so, can accomplish the religious aspect of their union and marry in the church or venue of their choice, assuming the ceremony complies with that churchs or venues religious beliefs. Easy, right? Doing this would guarantee equality under the law AND guarantee religious freedom and freedom of speech. I understand that there are those in the gay community that want to force their views on others, and I get that many in the faith community are fundamentalist and want the law to enforce their views. To both groups, I can only say that America is a nation of 300 plus million citizens. We do not all fit into one belief system, yet as Americans, we are all entitled to respect and freedom. As with most things, freedom is almost always the answer. I am saddened to see that Gifford family being oppressed by an out of control legal authority. I am very proud of the way they have handled themselves. I doubt I could have done as well. Personally, I would not pay the fines as I feel they are unconstitutional, and I would continue to host anyone I chose to in my home. No doubt it would not go well for me, but I have always been hard headed. In any case, God bless Cynthia and Robert Gifford. I appreciate you both for being such stand-up people!
