I almost made a solicitor cry today. He is with a construction company doing work in the area and was going around trying to drum up business, although officially they are only handing out the phone number in case they are too loud and just happen to be willing to give you a free home evaluation. I was walking my friend out to her car and was standing in front of my house. He came walking down the sidewalk behind me and starts walking onto my property. I told him we werent interested. He starts trying to explain his spiel and I tell him I dont care as I am walking back to my house and he is still standing on my driveway. He once again launches into his spiel to which I respond with a firm Go Away. He walked off my driveway onto the sidewalk and looked at my friend who was getting into her car in shock. He then shook his head and started to walk down to the neighbors and said That was so rude. in a loud and surprised tone. To this I called back, No, that was as polite as I get. I live in an area with an aging population and most of the crime in the area is scam artists or push in robbers who try to prey on the elderly. Even the legitimate solicitors tend to get pretty pushy when they think it is an elderly person alone. This is why I hang up on all phone solicitors and start with blunt when dealing with in person solicitors (who arent supposed to solicit anyways as it is illegal in the city when someone has a no soliciting sign posted, which we do) and quickly move onto aggressively rude. I dont enjoy being an asshole, but considering quite a few of the solicitors tend to work the same area for a while some of them start to get to know the neighborhood and what houses are easier marks than others. By being the way I am I have found that I have scared some of them off and they avoid our house now, which means my 86 year old grandmother is less likely to have to deal with them.
