I also had a conversation with both of the owners of Wildflour Gluten- Free Baking Company at the Redmond Saturday Market. We were talking about livable wages for hourly workers and I got schooled in a lot of interesting topics like: - society needs poor people so that the rich people have someone they can influence to pull themselves up to become rich - when people buy Lamborghinis, it benefits the poor people so we dont need to raise the minimum wage (I am not making this up - that was his example) - transit is ridiculously subsidized by people who drive (he was surprised to hear that more than 50% of our local roads are paid from the general tax fund which largely comes from property tax and sales taxes which the poor pay a disproportionate amount of, so therefore not only are drivers not paying their own way, they are certainly not subsidizing transit by driving. Driving is subsidized in large part by poor people who cant afford cars, and in fact since I had taken the bus to the market, I was also subsidizing the free parking that many of the rest of his customers were getting, as were any of the other people who bused, walked or biked there. - minimum wage jobs are only for kids in school who dont deserve to get a full wage yet because they can work their way up the ladder and be rich. In fact he was arguing that he should be able to pay workers less than the current minimum wage. - other random discussions about tax deductions for mortgages and buying cars and investing in 401ks (not sure how this applies to minimum wage earners who cant afford rent and dont get a 401k, never mind get a mortgage, but he was on a roll so I let him go) Needless to say if you were looking for an alternative gluten-free bakery to Flying Apron Bakery because you didnt want to put your money toward their campaign to crush the hourly worker, These arent the baked goods youre looking for. Move along. But the owners of Fancy Free Bakery in Kirkland are staunch supporters of livable wages so you should try them out and ask your local coffee shop to carry their baked goods, especially if they are currently carrying Flying Apron (or even if theyre not).
