I also sold, for my nephew, this Griswold #12 skillet. It is a solid cast iron frying pan made by Griswold of Erie PA circa early 1900s. There are a lot of cast iron Frying pans in the world, even quite a few made by Griswold but the #12 size is fairly difficult to find. #8 is common and so is #10 but #12 was larger and pricier when it was new so fewer people purchased them, resulting in their relative scarcity today. This one was covered in a very thick and sticky brown goo when it was found, as if someone had used it change the oil in their car circa 1970s and then let the old oil just sit in it for the past 4 decades. I cleaned with a combination of WD-40 (to melt the goo and help it slide off) and table salt (to provide a gentle abrasive). It is never a good idea to use soap or detergent on cast iron as the iron will absorb the flavor of the soap and then impart it to anything cooked therein. After a whole lot of scrubbing, the pan turned out pretty nicely. I seasoned it with heat and vegetable oil and listed it on eBay where it sold for $113.40. It had been purchased at auction for around $60.
