I always doubt my levels of sophistication in most situations. - TopicsExpress

I always doubt my levels of sophistication in most situations. Behaviors of certain people tend to compound my problems, and at worst confuse me. Too much money, or at least the pretense to have money, comes with interesting behaviors in society. Folks adopt interesting mannerisms to show that they are different from everybody in the street. One such is sudden preference of wine to other conventional drinks. But the problem is not sharpened tastebuds that demand wine. It is mannerisms and protocols that folks presumably adopt when indulging in their favorite pastime that keep me in the corner and almost wanting to throw a towel. Anyone who has been in a restaurant of late will understand my confusion. People order wine, usually the choice is between red white, red wine and or rosé. This can be chilled or dry, whatever all this means. The epic of wine drinking comes with sniffing or smelling a sample that the waiter pours in a special glass. I see friends and acquaintances put their noses inside the glass to smell the wine. Some sip the wine. And in almost all instances, the patrons nod in approval to signal their approval of the drink. Wherever I have been, nobody has ever turned down the wine and demanded the restaurant keeps its distasteful wine. Folks go on to drink bottle after bottle, and get really drunk. They dont only drink wine, they take other drinks as well. Phew! Nkosi Sikelel Afrika, maluphakanyiswe uphondo lwayo... Why do people smell drinks? When growing up my granny always discouraged us from smelling food. Why do people smell wine? What is it that they know to separate good from bad wine? Can this only be detected and isolated through dipping your unclean nostrils into a glass? Maybe I am not politically correct, please forgive me I am just confused!
